Why a document version history can be missing in the drafting tool

Leo Comia Updated by Leo Comia

Overview

When using the Drafting Tool (OnlyOffice) in Prompt, a certain version in document version history may not display in certain situations. This article explains why the version history may be missing and what causes this behaviour.

Why document history may not appear

The particular version history is not applicable when a new file is imported into the Drafting Tool (OnlyOffice).

OnlyOffice cannot generate a version history trace when:

  • A user uploads a brand-new document into the drafting tool
  • A document is replaced by uploading a new file instead of editing the existing draft within OnlyOffice

In these cases, OnlyOffice treats the upload as a new file rather than a continuation of the previous version.

Technical Explanation

  • The missing history is expected behaviour due to how OnlyOffice handles new file imports
  • Because the files were uploaded rather than edited within the drafting session, OnlyOffice did not generate a version history between them.

Summary

Missing document history in this scenario is not a system fault. It occurs when a new file is uploaded into the drafting tool, as OnlyOffice cannot generate historical tracking for externally uploaded replacements.
