Why is the PDF Document Title Displayed Incorrectly and How Can I Change It?

Leo Comia Updated by Leo Comia

When you upload a Word document in Prompt and converts to a PDF, the PDF document's title may display incorrectly. This is because the title is determined by the document's metadata, not the visible content. The metadata includes information such as the title, author, and subject, which may be incorrect or outdated if not updated before submission.

What is Metadata?

Metadata is hidden information embedded in a document that describes its properties. For PDFs, metadata fields such as Title and Author often appear in the document properties or when the file is opened in a PDF viewer.

For example:

  • The Title metadata may display as "Document1" instead of the actual document title.
  • This metadata can also appear in search results or as a default name when bookmarking the PDF.

How to Fix the Title Metadata in Word

If the PDF displays the wrong title, you can update the metadata in the Word document before converting it to PDF. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Word Document

Open the Word document that you plan to convert to a PDF.

Step 2: Update the Metadata

  1. Go to the File tab in the top-left corner.
  2. Select Info from the menu.
  3. Under the Properties section on the right, locate the Title field.
  1. Enter the correct title for your document.
  2. Optionally, update other fields like Author or Subject if needed.

Step 3: Save the Changes

Click Save to update the document with the new metadata and upload to Prompt.
